La Paz has the most extensive urban cable car system in South America and one of the largest in the world. With over 30 kilometers of network and 10 lines of different colors, it connects La Paz with El Alto, transporting more than 100,000 passengers per day.
Inaugurated in 2014 with the first three lines, the project was designed to solve one of the continent's greatest urban mobility challenges — connecting a city built in a canyon at 3,600 meters with its neighboring city at 4,000 meters. What once took up to 2 hours by bus now takes 10 minutes.
But beyond transportation, the cable car offers something no other means of transport can provide — a unique panoramic view of La Paz from the air. The red, yellow, green, and blue cabins cross over neighborhoods, markets, colonial churches, and the snow-capped peaks of Illimani in the background. It is an experience that travelers describe as one of the most striking in all of South America.
